The Feeling Inside "Hawaiian Mountain Mele"

You are standing on a high Maui ridge inside a lei of clouds, the cool mountain breeze whistling through the pines, the glittering ocean far below — and two mountain cultures, an ocean apart, are singing the same joy.

Inspirational Airy Adventurous Bright Transcendent

This is the conceptual centerpiece of Island Breeze — the song where Hawaiian mele and Alpine yodel meet on the peaks, and the album's whole philosophy of cultural harmony comes into focus.

Where the Song Takes You

It opens with the mountain wind itself. "Ka makani o ke kuahiwi, calling me to fly / ʻAuhea wale e ka lā, golden in the sky" — the wind of the high country calling you upward, the golden sun overhead. Then the ascent begins: footsteps beating in time, a lei of clouds around the peak.

Then something unexpected and joyful happens: a clear, virtuosic Alpine yodel bursts across the rhythm. It should not work — and it works completely. Hawaiian breeze and mountain air dance together, and the song becomes a kanikapila in the high altitudes.

"Kuahiwi and the kai, two worlds in one song / Hear the yodel meet the islands, carry us along."
Mountain and ocean, Europe and Polynesia — one song

This is the most personal song on the album. It mirrors composer Reinhard Elischka's own heritage — Austrian Alpine roots meeting 35 years of Maui ocean life. When the yodel meets the islands, you are hearing his biography set to music.

How It Sounds

Clear, ringing acoustic guitar and ʻukulele chords provide a steady ascending cadence — the sound of climbing. Alpine accordion, melodica textures, and harmonium weave continental melodic counterpoints seamlessly into Polynesian harmonies, while traditional Hawaiian ipu gourd rhythm blends with crisp folk percussion over a rich, resonant acoustic bass.

Lehua sings in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and English with pure, soaring phrasing; Makani answers with joyful, virtuosic Alpine yodeling. The result is an unforgettable cultural bridge — two mountain traditions recognizing each other across the world.
