The Feeling Inside "E hāpai, e ka nalu!"

Floating beyond the break at twilight. The horizon lifts and settles with each glassy swell, the water beneath you is bottomless indigo, and you are waiting — not forcing, not paddling — just breathing with the ocean until the wave decides to rise.

Hypnotic Oceanic Meditative Sacred Surrendering

This is the oceanic core of Longing — a five-minute trance built on the ancient surfer's prayer: e hāpai, e ka nalu — lift us, O wave. The longing here is the oldest one the islands know: to be carried, cleansed, and elevated by the power of the tide.

Where the Song Takes You

Long before surfing was a sport, it was a prayer. Ocean riders spoke to the sea before they trusted it — asking Kanaloa, god of the deep ocean, to lift the voyager safely across the water. "E hāpai, e ka nalu" is that ask: lift us, carry us, hold us up. The chant repeats it like a mantra because that is what waiting for a wave actually is — the same breath, the same request, until the ocean answers.

The middle passage honors the celestial protectors: "E pūlama mai e Kanaloa... e mālama e ka mahina... ka mālamalama o ke ao" — Kanaloa sheltering, the moon watching, the light of the world gleaming. Out past the break, the boundary between sea and sky dissolves. The surfer is suspended between two infinities, and the chant holds that suspension.

"E hāpai, e ka nalu — ka mana o ke kai"
"Lift us, O wave — the power of the sea" — the surfer's prayer, repeated until it becomes the tide's own rhythm

Then, past the three-minute mark, the chant crosses into English: "Stand for God and stand strong... Awaken O land... Shout O wind, lift up O wave... Cherish O sun, care for O moon... Give thanks O God." The same prayer the chant has been carrying all along, now spoken in a voice everyone can enter — the "Honi noli no" refrain threading through it like a current.

The repetition is the teaching. Big-wave riding — heʻe nalu — strips away human arrogance. You cannot command the ocean; you can only sync your breath to its pulse and ask. The chant enacts that surrender: five minutes of cyclical invocation until the boundary between the one asking and the one being asked disappears.

How It Sounds

Vast and hypnotic, built in layers. The first sixteen seconds are voices and rhythmic claps alone — no instruments. The hand drum and shaker enter at 0:16, a deep electric bass guitar anchors the groove at 0:27, and a bright hand-clap fill lands at 0:36. The felt pulse rests at ~76 BPM — the pace of a resting heartbeat on the water — while the drum and shaker grid subdivides at ~152 BPM, the constant double-time shimmer of surface chop over deep swell.

The vocals layer in trance-like cycles: male and female voices trading the chant in call and response, the "Honi noli no" refrain threading through everything, building to a polyphonic peak that simulates the exact sensation of being lifted by a towering swell. The outro dissolves into the refrain alone, repeated until it fades — the wave letting you back down.
