Where the Song Takes You

The chant opens with the ancestral summons: "E kū mai, e nā kūpuna! / E ala mai, e ka ʻāina!" — arise, ancestors; awaken, land. The response answers in unison: "Kū mai! Ala mai! / Ka leo o ka wā kahiko!" — the voice of ancient times.

Then the title command lands: "E hoʻōho, e ka makani! / E hāpai, e ka nalu!" — cry out, O wind! Lift up, O wave! And the chorus answers with the chant's beating heart: "Hōʻoho! Hāpai! / Ka mana o ke kai!" — shout out! Lift high! Behold the power of the sea!

The chant then turns upward, calling on the celestial bodies: "E pūlama, e ka lā! / E mālama, e ka mahina!" — cherish, O sun; protect, O moon — before the ecstatic climax: "E hoʻomaikaʻi, e nā akua! / E hoʻomaikaʻi, e ka honua!" — bless the gods, bless the earth — resolving into endless gratitude: "Ka pōmaikaʻi mau loa!"
